Scenic Overlook

Clear days, distant vision of skyscraper metropolis

New York City from upriver, a lifetime of 40 miles away.

There are stories to tell here. My brother caught with a date

in the backseat; safe haven during a treacherous night of rain

on windy roads after sophomore prom. Twenty years later and

she gets married to an Englishman.

I have visited this overlook often, seen development of safety.

It is a steep way down that has claimed its share of victims.

From here, behind the rock barriers,

you can see the mountain's namesake if the Hudson's air abides.

You can see history here, as far back as settlements, discovery.

Family picnics. Romantic endeavors. Transcendence.

Proclamations of love and stakes of territory scrawled on stone.

Below, the waters of Hessian Lake rise to meet the road,

threatening to overtake as cattails look on. Twenty miles to home.
